What Is Facial Resurfacing?

Have you tried everything for smooth, radiant skin but with little success? Facial resurfacing may be the answer you’re looking for.

Facial resurfacing is an aesthetic procedure that delivers beams of light to your skin, jumpstarting the repair process. This reduces things like fine lines, acne scars, uneven skin pigmentation and skin growths.

If this is your first time hearing about facial resurfacing, don’t worry. We’ll show you how it works and what to expect in this helpful guide.

What Should I Expect From a Facial Resurfacing Procedure?

Before Your Facial Resurfacing Appointment

Before you decide on any treatment, you’ll consult with a licensed physician. They’ll learn about your skin goals, any problem areas or issues you’ve experienced, any treatments you’ve tried before, and any sensitivities you may have.

From there, they’ll determine the best course of treatment for you. You’ll also learn how the treatment works and whether there are any potential side effects.

During Your Facial Resurfacing Appointment

The first thing you’ll do is lie down and get comfortable. Then, your licensed physician will numb the area with a local anesthetic. This will help minimize any discomfort you may feel during the procedure.

Once the area is numbed, the laser resurfacing begins. A device called an Erbium laser delivers short pulses of concentrated light beams to the outer layer of your skin. This creates a heat-based thermal injury to your skin.

When this happens, your skin’s natural repair process gets a boost. This repair process helps to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a protein found in our skin, muscles and bones. It’s responsible for skin elasticity, strength and hydration, which enhances your skin tissue and appearance.

Stimulating collagen through facial resurfacing can:

  • Reduce the appearance of blemishes, mild acne scars, sun spots and age spots
  • Smooth out wrinkles, skin texture and uneven skin tone
  • Restore your skin’s youthful look due to increased elasticity

Expect your treatment to last anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. The length of your procedure will depend on the size of your treatment area, the severity of the issue and your skin type.

After Your Facial Resurfacing Appointment

Once your treatment is finished, you may temporarily experience facial swelling, redness, tenderness or itchy skin. Your physician may apply a soothing topical ointment and inform you about any necessary aftercare you can do at home. This may include ice packs, taking pain relievers or getting enough rest.
