What Are Signs of Pituitary Problems?

When the pituitary gland is not working properly, your body may not produce the hormones it needs to function properly. This can lead to a range of symptoms.

Symptoms of an Out-of-Balance Pituitary Gland

The pituitary gland is the “master gland” of the endocrine system and produces at least eight different hormones. When your pituitary gland isn’t working optimally, it can affect your body in many different ways. Here are some key symptoms:

Growth Issues

In children, a lack of growth or excessive growth can be a sign of an out-of-balance pituitary gland. In adults, growth issues manifest differently. Sometimes, adults can experience a hormonal disorder called acromegaly, which leads to an increase in bone size in the hands, feet and face. Adults may notice that rings may no longer fit, that their shoe size has changed, or that their appearance in old photos looks unlike photos taken recently.

Sexual and Reproductive Issues

In males, pituitary gland issues that lower LH and FSH hormone levels can result in low or no sperm production and low blood testosterone levels. Females may experience reduced or missing periods, or they may have trouble getting pregnant. Look for these symptoms:

  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Reduction in menstrual periods
  • Male and female infertility

Other Symptoms

There are many other symptoms of an out-of-balance pituitary gland. Some people experience severe headaches. Others find themselves unable to lose weight, or losing too much weight even though they eat regularly. Look for these symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea, vomiting and weakness
  • Unintended weight loss or gain
  • Feeling cold all the time
  • Depression or anxiety

Sometimes a tumor can cause problems with your pituitary gland. In those cases, symptoms can include issues with vision and/or the ability to smell. This is because the pituitary gland is nestled between the temporal lobes in the brain and is surrounded by nerves that control vision and smell. When the tumor pushes against those nerves, your vision or your ability to smell may be affected.

Pituitary Gland Treatment

Hormonal disorders often require a customized treatment plan and ongoing care to help you understand and manage your own health. Medications are generally used to stand in for your body’s underperforming natural hormones and relieve symptoms.

Your medical provider may prescribe steroids, thyroid hormone replacement or pituitary gland extract. Your options will vary based on your unique needs.
