NAD+: Anti-aging at the Cellular Level

NAD+: Anti-aging at the Cellular Level

By Lisa Porter, FNP-BC

When we think about aging, we usually think about wrinkles, gray hair, or sore joints. But aging actually starts much deeper… inside our cells. As we get older, our cells don’t function as efficiently as they used to. The powerful molecule that plays a big role in this process is called Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, or NAD+.

So, What Is NAD+?

NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every cell in your body. Its job is to help turn food into energy and keep your cells healthy and repaired. Think of it like the charger for your cells.

When your NAD+ levels are high, your cells have the energy they need to do their job. When those levels drop, things start to slow down. Unfortunately, NAD+ naturally declines as we age, and that drop is linked to low energy, brain fog, muscle weakness, chronic disease and even skin aging.

Why NAD+ Matters

NAD+ helps activate important enzymes that repair DNA, reduce inflammation, and keep cells functioning well. When there isn’t enough NAD+, your cells struggle to repair damage, which can lead to fatigue, inflammation, and faster aging.

Studies show that boosting NAD+ levels may help:

  • Improve energy and metabolism
  • Support heart, vascular and muscle health
  • Help with focus and brain function
  • Improve recovery and healing

NAD+ and Your Energy Levels

Inside your cells are tiny structures called mitochondria- basically your body’s own power plants. They create the energy your body uses to move, think, heal, and function every day.

When mitochondria slow down (which happens with age, stress, or illness), you may notice:

  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Slower metabolism
  • Brain fog
  • Weaker muscles

Supporting NAD+ helps keep these “power plants” running smoothly.

NAD+ and Your Skin

Your skin is a great reflection of what’s happening inside your body. As NAD+ levels drop, skin cells don’t repair damage as well or produce as much collagen. This can lead to wrinkles, thinner skin, and slower healing.

Healthy NAD+ levels help your skin by:

  • Repairing DNA damage
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Supporting collagen and elasticity
  • Improving overall skin health

In short, NAD+ helps your skin act younger—not just look younger.

Why NAD+ Drops as We Age

As we get older, inflammation and everyday wear and tear use up NAD+ faster. At the same time, our bodies don’t make or recycle it as efficiently. Over time, this leaves our cells running on low power.

How to Support NAD+

You can support your NAD+ levels with everyday habits:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Get good-quality sleep
  • Eat healthy foods like salmon, mushrooms, avocados, and whole grains
  • Consider NAD+ precursor supplements like nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) or nicotinamide riboside (NR)

NAD+ Therapy (Direct Replacement)

  • NAD+ can be replaced through oral (liposomal) supplementation, nasal spray, injections or IV therapy
  • These approaches are most often used for people with low energy, brain fog, burnout, or chronic stress

A New Way to Think About Aging

Aging doesn’t have to mean feeling run-down or tired all the time. Science is showing us that by supporting our cells, we can slow down some of the aging process and feel better as we get older. NAD+ is a big part of that shift.

The Takeaway

NAD+ is essential for energy, repair, and overall vitality. Supporting healthy NAD+ levels may help you feel more energized, focused, and resilient over time.
