How Does Ozempic Work for Weight Loss?

How Does Ozempic Work for Weight Loss?

When exercise and diet don’t bring sufficient weight loss results, drugs like Ozempic can facilitate more noticeable loss by suppressing your appetite. Ozempic, a popular weight loss drug, includes the active ingredient Semaglutide, which helps decrease your appetite.

The New York Times recognized the value of Ozempic specifically for menopausal women. However, it can also be safely used by men or women experiencing a variety of weight loss challenges.

When adding any type of drug to your weight loss program, it’s important to do so under the guidance of a trained medical professional like those at Balance Hormone Center. Understanding how the drug works and its effect on your body is also important. Here’s what you should know.

What Is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a synthetic hormone that the FDA approved in 2017 to combat type 2 diabetes. It mimics the hormone “glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1),” which controls blood sugar by encouraging the pancreas to produce more insulin.

Four years later, researchers concluded that Ozempic also targets the GLP-1 receptors in the brain that control appetite and food intake. Further, they determined that it slows down digestion to create a feeling of fullness. In June of 2021, the FDA officially approved the drug for weight loss.

It’s important to note that, via the FDA

“Ozempic is recommended for chronic weight management in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 kg/m2 or greater who have at least one weight-related ailment or in patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater.”

How Do I Take Ozempic?

Once approved by your provider, you will likely take Ozempic via an injection into the thigh or abdomen. Your doctor will help you with the proper injection technique and may suggest you rotate injection sites to prevent irritation or lumps. You’ll want to avoid injecting into areas with bruises, scars, or hardened skin.

The dosage of Ozempic can vary based on individual factors, including weight, medical history and response to the medication. Generally, doses start out low and increase gradually to reduce potential gastrointestinal side effects.

It’s crucial to adhere to the prescribed dose and to keep track of changes in your appetite, food intake and overall well-being. Communicate any concerns or notable observations to your healthcare provider during follow-up appointments.

Ozempic is most effective when combined with regular exercise and a balanced diet. It’s been shown to have adverse side effects when taken with high-fat, high-sugar, and ultra-processed foods and drinks.
