Do I Need Estrogen Replacement?
Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is a common treatment option for women experiencing the often difficult symptoms of menopause. If you’re struggling with symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia and low libido, estrogen replacement might be a great therapy option for you.
What Is Estrogen Replacement?
Estrogen replacement therapy is a type of hormone replacement therapy that replaces the estrogen women lose as they age. The result is commonly known as menopause. ERT is often administered via a pill, gel, cream or patch, depending on your needs.
Is It Safe?
Estrogen replacement therapy is safe when administered by a knowledgeable physician and used for symptom relief. Of course, just like with any medical treatment, there are some risks. For example, some studies have been completed that show the extended use of hormone replacement therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer and heart disease.
At Balance Hormone Center, we use the process known as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) which utilizes bioidentical hormones with structures similar to those found in the body. The result is a hormone therapy process with fewer side effects.
As always, it’s important to discuss your individual risk factors with your physician to determine if hormone replacement is right for you.
What Does Estrogen Replacement Help Treat?
Estrogen replacement therapy is most often used to treat the symptoms of menopause. As women age, they lose estrogen over time which leads to menopause and a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Hot flashes
- Decreased libido
- Memory loss
- Weight gain
- Mood changes
- Anxiety or depression
For some women, these symptoms may be mild. However, for others, they’re life-altering and painful. If you’re going through any of these symptoms, estrogen replacement therapy might be a great next step.
Does Estrogen Replacement Therapy Only Help With Menopause?
It’s important to note that estrogen replacement therapy can also be helpful for women with estrogen deficiency due to other medical conditions.
For example, according to the Mayo Clinic, if you had your ovaries surgically removed before the age of 45 or lost function of your ovaries prematurely, estrogen therapy may help you prevent conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease and dementia.
