COMMON BOTOX QUESTIONS
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox has become North America’s No. 1 cosmetic procedure, but doctors used it as a medical treatment for decades before anyone discovered its cosmetic uses. Botox originates with Clostridium botulinum, which produces a very powerful substance that can stop muscles from moving temporarily. For more information, check out our What is Botox? blog post.
WHEN DOES BOTOX START WORKING?
You won’t see your Botox results right away. Botox usually begins to take effect between three and five days after treatment. However, it can take up to 14 days after treatment to see the full effects.
ARE BOTOX INJECTIONS PAINFUL?
Botox injections aren’t painful. You might feel a slight pinch, but a skilled injector works so quickly that you’ll barely feel anything before the treatment is over. If you are concerned, many providers use topical numbing cream. Talk to us about your concerns, and we’ll work with you to make sure you’re comfortable.
ARE BOTOX AND FILLERS THE SAME THING?
Botox and fillers are different treatments, although we often use them in combination to produce great results. Botox affects the muscles under the skin, temporarily relaxing the wrinkles on the skin’s surface. Fillers lessen wrinkles by plumping them up, adding volume and fullness to smooth the skin.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE BOTOX TO WEAR OFF?
Many people are surprised to learn that Botox isn’t permanent. That’s what makes it a good choice if you’re just starting in the world of aesthetic treatments. Your Botox will wear off over time, usually about three to four months. Some patients experience longer-lasting results. Participating in strenuous athletic activities can cause your body to metabolize Botox faster so that it wears off more quickly.
WHEN BOTOX WEARS OFF, ARE THE WRINKLES WORSE?
Botox does not cause wrinkles to get worse. When it wears off, you may notice your wrinkles more than you did before Botox. That’s because you’re comparing your “before” to the relaxed look of Botox.
Many people believe that Botox can be used to prevent wrinkles in the skin by relaxing the muscles underneath. These patients believe that if the muscle never contracts the wrinkle will never be created in the first place.
